Hey all, got a question about swapping engines in my '98 2500 4x4. It's a 360 gas engine. I have obtained a '94 360 gas engine to replace it with. My question is, will that engine work with my '98 tranny and engine controls, etc.? In other words, can I drop the '94 engine into the '98 and have it work? If not, what is my best course of action? I also have an old '95 1500 4x4 with a bad 360, but good tranny. Any help or advice would be awesome. Thanks!

 

I'm sure others will chime in on this. IIRC the only things that have changed are the sensors you may have to switch the intakes around and the Dist. I would leave both whole and get them side by side then write a list of all I see different to swap out. Once again IIRC the blocks are the same as well as the heads.

While it was out I would replace several components such as timing chain plenum gasket and the water pump. Plus the obvious tune up.

 

Yes, just use the 98 sensors, intake manifold (or block off the EGR on the 94 manifold) and it should work no problem.

 

If you live in a state that requires emissions inspections, you may have some difficulties getting that '94 engine to meet '98 regulations. In CA when you swap an older engine into a vehicle it still has to meet emissions for the chassis year.

 

I highly doubt anyone is going to go over the block to see what year it is. It's the same engine.

 

one thing that might become a problem is that if you have emissionbs where you live when you get and inspection sticker, thn there might be some problems there becuase the OBD2 was introduced in 96, so the 94 Engine may not have eerything s the same. but as other metioned above, switch sensors, intake etc. Just thought you should know about the OBD2 thing

 

Here in CA when you get your vehicle inspected every 2 years they will check the VIN and the engine number. They do this when you sell it, as well. No match, no pass/sale. You're supposed to notify the DMV whenever you replace the engine in order to update the records with the new #.
