Default Painting chrome mirrors?

My 97 has chrome side view mirrors, but I like the look of the black ones. I looked into buying black ones but they are pretty expensive because they are power mirrors. Has anyone painted their chrome side view mirrors? Looking for tips/tricks, or pics on how it came out. Thanks.

I dont think they are even chrome....they appear to be some sort of cheap chrome vinyl wrap like the grill...probably metal or black plastic underneath

they are plastic with a thick foil over it. Same chit plastic as the grille. Refer to my color match your grille thread.

I just painted mine a few months ago. Here are the steps...

1. clean mirror housing
2. scuff chrome with 80 grit
3. scuff chrome with 220 grit
4. tape mirror (glass) and anything else within 3' you don't want painted
5. prime
6. spray with dupli-color or black (2-3 coats)
7. spray with clear (minimum of 5 coats). Clear is the key. If you do not get enough clear on the mirror housing, then it will look dull within a few weeks. Obviously if you want flat black, you can ignore the clear step (#7)

Well I finally got around to painting the mirrors. Just sanded, painted with 3 coats of matte black, and 2 coats of matte finish clear.

Yeah it came out better than I expected, especially for a quick job. I dont mind the chrome bumpers, because they are actually chrome. But the plastic fake chrome mirrors bothered me. The grill is next but that will be color match so I have to track down some paint. I dont think the grill would look right if I just shot it with black.
