you can tell if its rings or not, by putting a capful(from a 1 quart bottle) of motor oil in the effected. cyl. if it brings the compression up, then its your rings.

O ya. two spark plugs were so gummed up with stuff they were not firing at all. so I changed the plugs and later that day is when it just started blowing smoke.
