atf 4
hey dont know much about my truck yet havent had it long enough. someone mentioned atf 4 and i looked into it. its a fully sythetic mopar brand atf. are there advantages to using this? are there any other products out there that would be equal or better? and where would i get this?
the atf+4 i just used wasnt dodge oem.....its made to dodges atf+4 standards by various manufactures
ATF+4 is just the new improved current version of what was atf+3 just like dextron 3 replaced dextron 2

It's recommended for these trucks now that Mopar changed it's formula to ATF+4.Mopar type 7176 ATF plus is what they came with new, then changed it 2-3 times since.I ran 7176 or DEXRON III (which was the same formula) in my 46RH for 386K with no problems.
I just mentioned that on another tranny thread here because there is a lot of strong opinions that dexron will destroy our tranny but no real reason given why...and why does my manual and dipstick say its ok? I could see how mixing the two could have bad effects but?...
The manual doesn't say its "OK". It says to only use it if there is no other alternative.
You can get ATF+4 at Wally world, which is pretty much everywhere, so there should never be a need for Dexron.
As far as halfamil's example, you will always have an exception to the rule. Some guys run the **** out of their trucks, pulling far heavier loads than they ever should with a 1500, and their automatic trannies never quit. Others follow the rules, do everything right, and their trannies quit at 50k. There is a certain level of chance/luck involved, as with anything, and it also depends on previous owners.
The only two fluids that I have never heard of at least contributing to a ruined 46RH or 46RE are the ATF+4 and Amsoil. Amsoil is a little harder to find.

don't use anything in your 01 46RE except atf+4. any brand is fine. mopar, valvoline, and walmart's tech-something are all common.

Either it damages the tranny or it doesnt and if it does tell us not to use it period!
My yamaha says to use only recommended yamahalube in it too.....I wonder what makes it work different than regular motoroil?
Many car makers try to plug their own branded products so usually I take it with a grain of salt especially when they list the other product to be used on the dipstick! but again thats why I asked because I never even noticed the line saying to use (and damage transmission?) when no other fluid is available which is silly because a smart person would have a quart right next to the extra quart of oil in the truck?

thats all I use but I simply dont understand why they even say the otherstuff can be used if its so bad?....
