Default Steering box rebuild?

I have a 1997 Ram 4X4 1500. The power steering gear box has started leaking PS fluid. A new box is pretty high priced. Can these be rebuilt? Does anyone offer aftermarket boxes and or parts?

Thanks.

There is a seal kit for them, and it is relatively cheap, but its a lot of work and from what I have heard it will more than likely soon start leaking again.

Pavementsucks.com has a write up on performing the rebuild, but there site is down for a bit write now so I cant link it for ya.

I think the seal kit is only available from the dealer , but not sure . You will need to flush/replace the PS pump also to do it properly . My friend just did his , so , until time passes , I can't comment on the durability except my rebuilt on my jeep has been tight for 3 yrs now . Your doing basically the same thing , rebuilding the box .

Yes , new bearing would also be recomended and available . Failing seals are caused by slack/play in the bearings . The seal is easily replaced alone , but will fail if the bearing is worn PDQ .

Thanks for that reminder .

Hmmm....Napa has a reman gear for $150. Seems like a good deal to me!

Then I'll just re-bulid the pump and get new hoses.
