2001 Dodge Fuel Issues
Hello,
Me and my brother have been doing a lot fo work to his fiances 01 Ram 1500. The truck has a 318 with an automatic (that we just went through).
While we were driving the truck we noticed it just didn't have the ***** it used to. So we started looking for a fuel filter and when we couldn't find one we started looking through the internet only to find a bunch of different answers and nothing definite.
Does the truck have one? From what we can tell there is a squatty black canister on top of the fuel pump. Is it built into the fuel pump?
Also the truck is pinging slightly. Not always the case and not really dependent on load or hard acceleration. Is it possible that the regulator is bypassing too much fuel back to the tank not allowing the fuel injectors to atomize the fuel correctly? I would like to know how to diagnose the fuel system for any problems.
Thanks ahead of time for all of your help guys.

welcome to DF
fuel filter is integrated into the tank for your convenience. test fuel pressure at the rail, should be about 49 psi. to change pump/filter, drop the tank or raise the bed. this is probably NOT your problem.
pinging is usually leaking plenum. theres some good DIY info at the top of the 2nd gen. install hughes plate for about $150.
