Default whp vs bhp

This question is not specific to our trucks, and I apologize for that.

My friend and I were discussing how much power is lost between the crank and the wheels (on average). He said a car with an automatic transmission would loose 18% hp. So the 318 would get 180 at the wheels? I would have expected it to be more of a loss.

Could somebody clear this up for us? It would be greatly appreciated.

It depends entirely on the vehicle in question.

A 4x4 loses more compared to a 4x2 through the drivetrain due to all the extra parts, for example.

Typically, our trucks lose at least 15%-20%. Some reports are as high as 20%-25% with the later generation rams (3 and 4).

It does vary with every model of vehicle, though, depending on all sorts of factors from 4x4 or 4x2, quality of the parts on the vehicle, efficiency of the parts, etc. etc.
