I have a 96 dodge 1500 sport 4x4 with the 5.2 and 5 speed manual transmission. I have been reading on the site for years and found lots of helpful info. Spent hours searching and couldn't find anything like my problem this time. I was coming home and 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear started making a weird noise... sorta like gears meshing but not having enough lubrication and then by the time i got home 5th gear and reverse started making the noise also. 4th gear still sounds like normal and it only makes the noise above 1000 rpm when accelerating and every once in a while decelerating. I thought the oil might have gotten low so i checked it and the level was good but i decided to change the oil anyways. The transmission is only 2 years old with about 25,000 miles on it. i also checked the transfer case oil, front and rear differential and all oils looked good and were full. Planning on taking it to a shop on Monday but would really like to not have to spend the money to get it fixed if i can figure out where the noise is coming from exactly and possibly how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

 

If its only two years I'd blame the rebuilder. My tranny is perfect at 117k. If they didn't use Mopar oil for it it will burn up. The new venture transmissions are very specific in their oil. All manuals state so.

 

Sounds toast. What fluid are you using by chance?

 

I got the transmission from man-trans, i got the transmission a lil over 2 years ago and its got about 25,000 miles on it since then. They said to use only a 5-30 full synthetic motor oil in it or it would void the warranty(1 year) so all ive ran in it was 5-30 royal purple full synthetic and its never been low on oil.

The NV3500 is supposed to have synchromesh... It's similar to 5w30 but with specific additives for transmissions... The NV4500 I believe is spec'd for 5w30 so they may have confused it with that tranny.

 

Even when i called them back up for help in diagnosing it they asked and said for the nv3500 that they sold me that i should have been running the 5-30 full synthetic motor oil and when i told him i did he said it must of gotten low on oil and that is about the only reason it would do that. I lost the original transmission because it got low on oil, so i made sure i checked it every 1500-3000 miles and not once was it ever low. When i told him it was full, he insisted on it being ran low on oil. I would of used syncromesh if they recommended it, but they said anything other than a 5-30 full synthetic motor oil would void the warranty and thats why i used that.

 

Well, thats the people im getting my nv3500 from. There like 75 miles from me and i was going to pick it up from them so i wouldnt have to pay shipping. Let me know how this all works out. Like, how there warranty works out..

Well you should find the dealer info about what the tranny takes for oil (some special Mopar fluid that syncromesh is rated to replace) and show it to them. They had you using the wrong oil, this is their fault.

Also FWIW I overfill my tranny a bit, 2qts just isn't a lot of fluid IMO.

 

What should i do when i get mine from there? Cause im alittle worried that if i use the correct fluid in it instead of what they want me to use in the tranny i get, they wont cover it under warranty. This sucks, I was really wanting to get my tranny from there since there so close to me.
