Default Jeep guy...what?

so I am a member of Jeepforum and came across an applicable motor to you guys. so...

I was in the shop on campus today and came across a motor and transmission that has been sittin in the same spot for 4 years (from what i was told). Looked exactly like the 318 in my Grand Cherokee. However, I saw that it had the starter on the driver side which means its from a Ram (as the starter is on passenger side in Jeeps). I'm hoping it might be a 360 w/ the matching 46RE transmission. Is there any way to tell if it's a 360/318 or a 44RE/46RE?

Look on the front of the block just below the driver's side head. There should be a stamped number there which will include the displacement.

Also, most of the 5.2s got the 44re and the 5.9s got the 46re.

the 5.2 is internally balanced and the 5.9 is not so it will have a balancer on the crank and the 5.2 will not

it's a 44RE. and from what i've heard, i could still use my existing pcm but it wouldnt give me the richer fuel mixture i'd want.

Well according to the information that I have found the 42RH was used for the V6 2WD, the 46RH was used for the V6 4WD and V8, and the 47RH was used for the V10 and Diesel (1994-1997), 42RE was used for the V6 2WD, the 46RE was used for the V6 4WD and V8, and the 47RE was used for the V10 and Diesel (1998-2001), other years I'm not sure....
