Default Oil pan removal question

I have a 98, 1500, 4x4, 5.9 gas. I recently replaced the timing chain and when I pulled the cover I ripped the oil pan gasket. I need to replace the entire gasket as it is too shot to RTV. Haynes says I have to raise the motor to get the oil pan down??? Do I need a hoist or can I jack the motor up from below? Also if I need a hoist can someone please tell me exactly where I should attatch the hoist to the block front and back. There are no empty holes I can see and I would prefer not to remove all of the accesory bracket if I don't have to. Thank you in advance for you assistance.

Evan

First you need to remove the fan shroud, loose the motor mounts, disengage the auto shifter and possibly remove the y-pipe from the exhaust. Then use a wood block on your jack and you can jack the motor at the balancer.

Hope this helps

I agree, I've had the pan off four times with the motor in the truck..... it's a long story.

Granted, it's tight but the pan will come off without lifting the motor.
