Default Emissions test

We get emissions testing done here in Colorado. Typically a stressful time cause you can't get your tags renewed if you can't pass. I wasn't sure how I'd do since earlier this year I had a new motor, exhaust, and PCM put in. But lately I've got this cutting off issue too. You can watch the test and the screens stopped early and flashed something like turn it off and check for CEL and other things. I was really nervous. They pulled it forward and called me out. I started joking with the guy and finally he said, nope, it got a fast pass. It passed like a damn Honda Civic. Apparently if you run certain levels for your vehicle, it will shut down the test to move it through faster.
Since I bought the truck in '98 with 43k miles they have reduced the limits on emissions. HC went from 6 to 2, CO went from 53 to 20, and NOX went from 9 to 4. Looking back at my old tests I'm running HC and CO at the same level of 131k miles, CO2 is higher than it has ever been, and NOX is probably somewhere around the same level of 90k miles. I'm not sure what's causing a high CO2 reading but, it passed and passed fast so I'm happy!

Congrats. I'm so glad they did away with that in my county, at least for now.

We have the same testing here, but it's every other year or when you transfer ownership. The levels don't change from year to year, though. How could a vehicle be expected to meet lower minimums as it ages or lower than what it was designed for? You couldn't even buy a truck like mine in CA today because it would never meet the regs for a 2010 vehicle.

I don't know. Not much makes sense. You'd think they'd want newer cleaner cars on the road but tags are based on the price of the car. So the newer cars cost a fortuned just to put tags on. The truck, $80 for tags. Some new cars are running $1000 for the same piece of stamped metal with numbers on it. Go figure!

Ours are based on value, also, but it goes down as the vehicle depreciates. In the case of a commercial tag, the weight fees get tacked onto whatever the vehicle value is. That's why my Ram costs over $200 more than my Jeep. The value thing is pretty unfair, really, because you are already paying more in sales taxes on that vehicle and get saddled with the higher registration fees, as well. It is actually more attractive to buy a used vehicle because you can get the seller to say you paid a lot less for it and that will not only save you in sales taxes, but it will reduce the value of the vehicle for registration and DMV doesn't require anything more than your statement on what it cost. Sellers often leave the value blank on the title for this reason. The buyer can write in whatever he wants.

there's no emission test where I'm at and tags are the same for PU trucks regardless of the sales price.
1000 bucks for tags?? holy crap.
I guess for it's negatives, there are some nice things about Ohio.
