Default How can I tell what my fuel capacity is?

Just got my 1997 Ram 1500 5.9L, extended cab, short bed. I think the fuel gauge may be stuck above 1/4 tank. It was there when the truck was delivered, and I have driven close to 100 miles since and it is still there. The guy who delivered the truck said that he filled up whenever the truck got close to 1/4 tank. So he never saw it go lower.

How can I tell if I have a 26gal tank, or the 35gal tank. I plan on running out and filling up the tank after dinner, but even if the fuel guage gets stuck at 1/4 tank, I just can't figure out how many miles that gives me per tank on average.

run it out of gas then fill it up when your full look at the gas pump it will tell you how much gas you put in..

Bring a gas can with you..

you can check the manual if you have it. My moneys on a 26 gallon tank. or,if it's on a quarter tank, fill up an other quarter and multiply by 4.

^ Not all the time. Right now, I would just fill up and if you go over 24 gallons or so, then you more than likely have a 35 gallon tank If you only squeeze in 19-20, then I'd say you have the little tank.

You have a 26 gallon tank. Peroid. End of story.

I just filled up and she took 15gal. I guess that proves that I have a small tank. Now to see what kind of mpg I get on 87 oct. Next will be 91 oct.

Actually, unless you are running a tuner or pinging, octane reading isn't going to make a difference. 89 octane is the preferred in these motors from the factory I think. It might be 87, but I don't think so.

All octane does is control the rate at which gasoline detonates. If the motor doesn't need it, then you might as well take that extra $10 or so and light it on fire when you get home. It's just a waste.

Stick to what you know, Max. Extended cab, short bed here with a 34 gallon tank. There were 24, 34 and 35 gallon tanks used on these Rams.
