Default Front axle spline gears

Well it's been another great day here working on the truck.
New problem at least it looks to be.

When looking down the axle tube on passenger side it appears that the spline shaft from the axle is suppossed to go into another splined hub then to the axle shaft itself.
Is this the shift collar?
What side should the collar be on right now?
I don't know if the axle shaft will fit in this side,,,,,Will it?
What do I do????????????
I'll try to attach pic

the shiny part is the intermediate shaft and the ring closer to the camera is the shift collar. it was obviously on the passenger axle shaft when you pulled it (it sits half way on the passenger axle and the intermediate shaft when you have it in 4x4) and that is why it fell off to the side. this could mean that you have a problem with your cad unit. so do what zman said and inspect.

Thanks I'll do that once I'm done pounding on the front end, I'm assuming this is why they fell apart.
I can assume I'll need to replace the gasket under the cover, the way my luck has been.
Everything is off the truck so far except ball joints still waiting on the press... Picked one up last night brought it home then realized it was bent..
Thanks again ZMAN you've been a big help..
edit here
thanks also to sherrif

use rtv on the cad unit, just like the diff cover.
i asked about the gasket a few months ago too and got the same answer. it doesn't leak with rtv.
the cad units bolts should be torqued to 96 inch pounds.

And be easy on those little bolts when you remove them. They have a tendency to break.

Well the bottom 2 bolts broke.
Sheared clean off above cover, Must have been those New England winters.
Studs stick up a good amount but are still stuck I heated them up and let them cool to help break them, will finish tomorrow.

What gear oil should go in here The haynes says hypoid 90w GL5, is this just a EP 90w gear oil?

pretty much any gear oil. 75w90, 80w90, 85w90, 90w, 75w140, 90w140.
they're all GL5 rated.

yeah, those little tiny sob cad bolts are a pain.
rtv plus snug is all they need.

cad shift fork should be engaged in the big groove in the collar. shift fork then slides back and forth. toward passenger side is disengaged. toward drivers side is engaged.

96 inch pounds is snug. i've gotten more into the habit of using a torque wrench lately.
