Actually, you couldn't possibly install the shocks with the coils out... well, you could, but you couldn't put the coils back on once you were done

The shocks don't have anything to do with "holding" the coils in there. They are compressed and then placed between the control arms.

yea you have to, but some people just lift the truck, leave teh axle in place, and set the shock down in, so thats what i ment, misunderstood...

the spring doesnt hold anything in, this it true, but the axle has nothing to stop it from dropping a far distance as of now, so if you were to hit a heck of a bump, you could "drop" a coil spring out, normally the shocks act as the limiting straps and it stops the axels drop amount.. so to explane another way, no shocks= no limit to the drop amount odf the axle. except maybe the tracbar...

the track bar limits the axle drop. i know because i had to disconnect mine to put my coil spacers in.

Sorry man, but this is just wrong. The shocks are not a structural part. If you were to hit the limit of travel on a shock it would tear it apart or damage the mountings. They are not strong enough to stop the travel of a 1000# axle. Axle travel is normally controlled by the control arms and the track bar. Under normal operation there is no way to extend the travel enough for a spring to pop out because you would reach the mechanical limit before the spring extension limit. That's why springs have to be compressed to be installed unless you disconnect the track bar to allow the axle to drop beyond its mechanical limit of travel.
