Default What should an engine swap cost?

What do you think is a reasonable price for a shop to charge to put in a new engine? I found a 5.2 out of a recked Durango and need a shop to pull my old one and put in this one. One shop quoted me 1275.00 in labor which I think is just rediculous. What do you guys say?

Just to have the motors swapped??

My boss just had a 360 built up, and he has a 318 in it now. He doesnt want to do the swap himself, for his new motor is all performance parts (and he has no time to do it, he full with side jobs right now), and some wiring needs to be done. He was quoted $600 to do te swap and wiring.

If it's so "ridiculous" then why don't you swap it yourself? It drives me nuts when people complain about what a shop charges to perform certain tasks. The work involved with be more than just swapping engines.

Either way, do it yourself or be quiet and pay up.

Certainly agree!!!

I really dont think that $1275 is that bad of a charge. But $0 in labor, a weekend, case of beer, getting to know your truck, and knowing that you did it right sure beats $1275. Plus while DIYing it you can also take extra time to clean the engine compartment, and do preventive maintnance on the engine from the 'Rango. Stuff like: Replace freeze plugs, gaskets, oil pump, water pump, timing chain, do a tune up, do the plenum gasket repair, and I'm sure I forgot something!

But, what does that shop charge hourly?

Seems like alot of money for just a motor swap, look for another shop and see how much they want to do it, around here could get it done for less than a 1,000 no prob but then again prices change in areas

Really the only special equipment you need is an engine lift. The rest is just regular hand tools.

I think you should have used a more descriptive thread title.
