Post Gear Swap

How much do you think a gear swap would cost for both axles. I plan on doing the 4.56:1 gears. Gear sets, seals, bearings, (and maybe a rear locker). 9 1/2 rear and 44 front. Doing it myself or let a mechanic do it.

This guy has pretty good prices on parts and such, labour would most likely run you about 75 to 100 an hour depending on the shop you take it to.

This is not something you "just do" you can really screw it up and ruin some pretty expensive and important parts if you mess up even the smallest thing.

You need a new front carrier for the dana 44. Let a shop do it. http://completeoffroad.com/c-69615-g...-packages.html

If you call them for an extra 60 you can get rear yukons.

Oh I'm looking at just under 2k for both done and rear locker.

the local dodge dealership said 900$ for 4.11 gears

a local shop that deals mostly in dodge rams said 600$ for both axles

that is with me supplying gears and master install kits.

We did my gears ourselves and it wasn't too bad. As long as you do it correctly and follow the directions its not too bad. The hardest part is setting the pinions shims but if you work with cars a lot you should be able to do it. If you think its wrong then you can just trailer it to a shop to have them check it.

i was going to go with 4.88 gears for my 35x12.50 tires and i found that yokon gear has a thick cut ring gear for the 44 so you dont have to change the carrier which is much of a pain its way easier if you dont change the carrier for you only have to shim the pinion depth. now the 9.25 is a brezze dont forget to keep your factory shim in the rear end i always use that as a starting point aka add more or take away less..

i have done my 1987 ramcharger 44front 9.25 rear with 4.56 gears not to bad of a job beats paying 1000.00+ dallars also done a complete overhaul including replacing the carrier with a power loc instead of the crappy trac loc lsd dana 60 which is a nightmere but i did it. The dana 60 is what we race with

my best advice is take your time and dont expect it done tomorrow and read books on it i think summit racing has a few on rear ends i learned a lot from books and repair manuals if you have any ? dont hesitate to ask a more knowledgeable person dont just put it together and say i think its done right say i know its done right.

i refuse to take anything too the shop my dads moto man built it i can fix it!!! knowledge is the key my friend

hope this helps

i work at a shop and i looked up in the flat rate book how long it will take to do my gears front and rear. i think it was around 11 or 12 hours for both of them. so take what ever the shop charges and hour times 11 or 12 to get you labor cost. and i bought my 4.56s from the completeoffroad site that max posted. i called them and got the yukons for the rear also for 60 bucks. they have good customer service.
