tranny issue
i have a 99 ram 2500 v 10 4x4 and the tranny all of a sudden decided to not want to kick down when i step on it and it wont shift into overdrive and it seems to want to stay in 2nd gear unless i shift it manualy, this all started te other day when what i thaught was my alternator went out. but i put a new one in it and still not sufficiant charge, so i put in a new batery and had more charge but that didnt last either, and now the tranny is all messed up. any idea what the heck is going on with my truck? havnt pulled any codes as of yet, will do that tommorow.
You seem to be confusing the issues here.
If you are having a charging problem, take care of that 1st and then move on to the tranny issue.
Is the GEN light activated ?
If you determine the ALT is putting out the proper 14V but not reaching the battery, make sure the wiring & grounds are good, made sure the ALT fuse is good.
If they are, you probably have a bad ECM/PCM, and that could be causing both the lack of charge and the tranny problem.
So the 1st step is determine if the ALT is putting out, just because its not charging the BATT doesn't mean its bad.
If necessary, take the ALT right out and take it to a parts store like Murrays that will bench test it, that will end all guess work as to whether its functioning properly or not.
If bad, obviously get a new one.
If it tests good, put it back in and measure voltage at the battery, if its not around 14v look here
