Rear Axle Ratio on 1997 Dodge Ram 1500
OK guys, this is sort of embarassing.... I bought my 1997 Dodge Ram new way back when. I've misplaced my Dodge folder which had the specs, the invoice, and all other sort of info about my truck. (I'm a very, very "senior" citizen)
I always thought I had a 4.1 rear axle ratio. How can I determine exactly what I have?
Thanks......... Jason

here's how.
assuming you have an open diff (non lsd or non working lsd).
jack up one rear tire.
put a mark on the rear end yoke or drive shaft.
put a mark on the tire.
turn the tire exactly 2 revolutions and count the drive shaft revs.
it will be something like 3.55, 3.7x, 3.9x, or 4.1x
the reason you have to turn it around twice is due to the extra revolution of the spider gears. also - if you don't leave one tire on the ground, you'll get inconsistent spider gear turns and a garbage result.
assuming you have a working LSD or locker. with one tire jacked up, if it will not spin, then jack up the other and turn the tires one revolution instead of 2.

exactly how damn senior are we talking about here ?
90 ? too old to count the revs
80 ? too old to remember the count
70 ? too old to operate the jack
60 ? too old to get out from under the truck once you get under it.
55 ? that barely qualifies for aarp...

Easy now, I'm 60 and I worked on my trans this past weekend and I got out from under no problem, (wife had to rub sore back and kink in neck). lol

Now what was that question again young man?........lol
ha ha.
better count them rev's before your next birthday. you're coming up on a milestone.
post the answer.
1000 to 1 its a 3.55 gear.

well then is a couple of way with out getting under the truck
open the hood and look up behind the grill
or tell us your tire size and how fast your going at 2000rpm?
for ex...245/75/16 with 3.92 gear = 2000rpm at 67mph
