You just had the engine rebuilt and they didn't touch the oil pump or pickup screen to at least remove the debris? Any engine that needed rebuilding due to bearing failure should get a new oil pump. The tolerances on these things are so tight that if any metal, even soft bearing bronze, went through them they should be replaced.

 

well,i rebuilt the engine myself....i guess i'll pull the pump tomorrow and replace it...any way to replace it without having to pull the distributor and center shaft to prime it?

 

DON'T pull the distributor.

simply drop the oil pan and unbolt the 2 bolts that hold the oil pan to the bottom of the block. hold onto it so it doesn't hit you in the head. when reinstalling, use the thin paper gasket and be sure the shaft is engaged and that it sits flat against the block.

you don't need to remove the rear main cap - only the oil pump which is beside it.

edit - MAKE sure your distributor shaft is not broken. no reason it should be, but while its exposed, check it. it runs through the rear main cap.

okay well, when i replace the oil pump, do i have to prime it some how or will it prime itself just by me putting oil in it?
