Default Tranny Question

My transmission light came on recently and it has me worried. For the most part everything seems to shift fine, however I ahve noticed something that if I take the shifter out of D and put into 2 or 1 gear then move it back to drive it won't go back properly. The gauge on dashboard says its in D but in actuality it'll be in 2 gear. I have to put it into N then back into Drive to get it seated just right. This only does this if I put it in the lower gears and back to drive without N first.

any ideas about whats giong on here? Its a 5.2L automatic 2001 RWD

Welcome to the forums.

Could be a number of things going on. Could be as simple as the linkage being jammed up or something along those lines, but I doubt it with your trans light coming on. That usually only happens when something more serious has occurred.

Take it to a tranny guy your trust, ASAP. Get it checked out, hopefully its something simple and it hasn't already ruined the rest of the transmission.

i got the light on the way home from the dealer when i bought the truck. it turned out that it was the torque converter kicking the bucket and the light was from the transmission overheating. when the transmission overheats it will kick out of overdrive and the overdrive won't engage again until it cools off.
