HELP!! Weird Transmission problem 98' Ram
Ok, I have what I believe to be two seperate problems, but I want some verification on this before I drop some cash. If i'm wrong please let me know!
Started having this problem about 2 weeks ago. Here are the details--
1998 Dodge Ram 5.2L
Automatic transmission
Truck won't shift into 2nd unless I let off the gas or until it hits 3k+ RPM's.
The shift is smooth when it decides to go into gear
ALL the other gear shifts (2nd-3rd etc) are smooth and on-time
Reverse works fine
This is with regular city driving, babying the gas (who loves that 12mpg) and never flooring it.
I put in some of that lucas slip stopper tonight, and it seems to brought the 1st-2nd shift down to about 2.5k.
I'm thinking it needs fluid changed and another bottle of that tranny goop, or has a worn band. Thoughts?
-------------------------
Next order of business, my second problem. This happened two days ago...
Heard an odd popping sound when I put my truck in park.
The indicator that shows what gear its in (P, R, N, D, etc) is now off. it shows partly in neutral when it's actually in drive, shows fine in 2nd but not at all in 1st.
When I put it in park, it shows that it's in park but I can't turn the key back to take it out. I have to mash the shifter further up and only then can I take the key out, and the shifter locks.
When I put the key back in to start it, I have to wiggle the **** out of it to get the shifter to unlock. but the truck no longer starts in park, ONLY NEUTRAL!
Also, when I shift from park to reverse, it seems to go way to easily. There's very little tension unlike when I shift to other gears. I thought the reason for that might be that it's not coming out of reverse completely, but when it's in park the truck does stop moving...So I have no clue.
Now, from what I know starting in neutral and not park is 99% of the time a neutral safety switch. What's throwing me off is the odd thing with the shifter and what I have to do to take the key out.
Sorry if I rambled on too much, i'm just seriously stressed right now and need to make sure I know 100% what my problem is. I got out of class yesterday to find my battery dead and my tire flat, the day after my shifter starts acting funny. I have finals all this week and next, then graduation 2 days later. This is just really the last thing I need! :P
Thanks to everyone in advance, if you're in the beaumont, texas area I'll take ya out for a beer, or 30.

Your Servo between 1st and 2nd gear is starting to go bad they a fairly inexpensive however you need to remove the valve body in the trany to do it. This can be done with the trany still in the truck. While you are there you might as well change the one between 2nd and 3rd as well it will only be a matter of time befor that one goes as well. The pop you heard was probably the indicator spring braking off the back of the gear shift. because that is off the plastic is binding the gear shift when you enter park making it hard. Believe it or not Had the same issue with mine.
