Default taking motor out to rebuild it, should I 408 stroker or not?

So i decided to get a new truck which is a 2008 dodge ram 1500 5.7 hemi Laramie heated leather the whole nine yards. bank should call me in the morning to tell me if i can or not.(dealership told me im to young, 19, to go threw there banks i have great credit and make way more than i need to but im to young)

So now that i need to take most of my motor apart on my 99 im thinking of taking the motor out and rebuilding the entire thing.

I want to possibly make it a 408 stroker so i would need to get it machined and all that. I will probably take the entire motor apart and then take the parts to whoever i am going to get to machine it and have him put it all back together.

My question to you guys is should i get anything else aftermarket while its torn down. As you can tell i have
Hughes FI air-gap
1.7 rr
and fastmans TB

so i wont need them but i was thinking but not sure if there worth it like new higher performance head, or a new cam while its all torn apart

Im going to get a heated shop a few blocks from my house now to work on it with all kinds of room to move(single car garage with 5 inch lift and wide tires really sucks to work in with my truck as far back as it can go i have about 2.5 feet in front of my truck to work)

Doing a 408 stroker is not cheap by any means. I'd just rebuild your motor. A lot cheaper and better for the long haul. I actuall had the same question about what to do and decided to just rebuild the 360 and keep it that way. Albiet some after market mods and what not.

If moneys not an option than go for the stroker. Just be prepared to visit the gas station everyday.

i was just wondering, what is a estimate price on a 408, mostly just to machine and put together.

Money is an issue with everyone, but it will be build that i do over time. probably a few years.
Im going to pull the motor out and have it rebuilt and all that and in the mean time ill probably upgrade to 1 ton axles and steering and possibly more lift, i already have 12 inch lift coils ready to order i just have to say the magic word.

Ill do most the work but im not that smart when it comes to the pistons and all that but other than that ive had most of the motor and suspension apart

Owning 2 trucks is not very practical, not to mention more costly. But hey if money is no object,go for it.

For what it's worth, it is quite possible to build up that 360 and stroke it out, put nice heads and a nice cam on it etc and still have it function with your ECU. Of course you'd have to flash it but, everything will bolt right in like OEM and work. Even your intake would work. You would have to change your TB bore size though to accommodate for the larger displacement but, other than that, all else would be a breeze. I think there's quite a bit that can be done to those 360s where, you can get some real nice power going on there without having to up the block size any. I wish I had one in my truck.

Just a thought. Were you planning on running the stroker stock or modding it? If going stock, a modded 360 can be just the ticket without having to change anything.

for the money and the parts you already have, I would consider just some nice ported heads that match up to the F.I. air gap, beehive springs of course, and a stout cam. Then give it some longtubes and tie it all together with the SCT. All that around 3,000$ And if thats not enough, supercharge it.

Don't under estimate small blocks, they are very potent if tuned right. A 403 would be nice, but if your going to spend money, get a 440, convert to 5 speed and carburate it.

I would do what rocky said. If you still weren't happy you can always supercharge it like mentioned above. I have seen used superchargers for around a grand.

440's have some serious grunt. You would need to find a junked Ram Charger or 1st gen Ram with the 440, then use those mounts and weld them to your frame. You would need to ditch the computer, and run this thing bare bones. It would be one hell of a Mudder!

I like the 408 idea.
You should be able to use your rockers, intake, and other mods you've already purchased to start with.
I'd upgrade to a set of Hughes Stage 1 or 2 heads, (or similar) as suggested.
Building a stroker isn't much more than what would cost to properly rebuild a 360. Chances are you'll need to bore the block and if the crank has to be cut more than .010, you'd want a better crank. Rods should be checked and align bored, etc. All these possible issues are solved with new components.
