visually,
class 2 is dinky looking, with a 1-1/4 inch receiver tube. max weight 3500
class 3 is standard, 2 inch receiver tube. max wt 5000
class 4 is a little bigger, 2 inch tube, max 8-10. doesn't look much different.
class 5 is massive, 2-1/2 inch tube, max 12-15

if you're setting up for heavy tow, be sure and match the ball and bar to the hitch. some *****/bars are lightweight, some heavy.
