hitch question (i feel stupid)
It will fit and in reality it is a better application. The OE hitch is only rated for 5000lbs even though the 2500 can have a 8700~9100lbs towing capacity. I am sure the hitch is as strong as any of the aftermarket hitches with higher ratings, but if you go to rent something that is 6000 lbs, you are going to get turned away with the OE hitch even though you have a truck that is rated to tow it. They 1500s towing capacity is 3500~5000lbs.
well im not going to tow heavy loads, but i tow stuff with ball sizes from 1 7/16 to 2 and 7/8's. plus on the small trailers the back end is practically dragging from being on my bumper. not to mention turning radious.

The factory hitch and the Mopar one are a Class IV hitch rated for 10,000 pounds.
A 1500 like mine is rated to tow around 7000 pounds. If I had my owner's manual with me I could tell you.
And to the OP, yes, it will fit. The Mopar one I got came off a 1996 Ram 2500.
now your both right. the hitch it says, and i quote (i quote a hitch lable) "5000lb dead trailer weight, 500lb toung weight. 10,000lb with weight distr. hitch, 1000lb toung with weight distr. hitch"
