i read about the clunk on here but cant find it so made new thread is the drive shaft post to turn freely 1/4 just by useing ur hand if not plz tell me what it could be
and what are the symptoms on a blown penulm gasket i think i heard misfires cuz i check my scaner and one day i had all misfires the now i only have cylinder 8
if there is any tension on the drive line, you will not be able to rotate the drive shaft. on the other hand, if you have the truck on level ground, wheels chocked (don't get run over), and trans in neutral, then you'll be able to move the driveshaft "some". this indicates the play in all the different gears - pinion, ring, spiders. some play is normal, but 1/4 turn of the driveshaft seems a little bit excessive. even at that, i wouldn't worry about it unless you've got a specific problem. my old chevy has a lot of play, and a big clunk, and still runs/pulls at about 300k miles.
If you have 90* of play in a drivshaft, you should be taking the diff cover off and having a look. If it really is 90* of play, that thing would slam SO hard whenever you put the truck from D to R or vise versa.
If the gasket is bad you will have a random missfire in the rear two clinders. To see if the gasket is bad remove your throttle body and look down int the intake, if you see small streaks of oil the gasket is bad. If you see alot of oil the gasket is gone.

It would probably break the yoke, among other things if it really had that much play.
