Default How to do a leak down test?

well as some of you may know i may have blown my head gasket or cracked my heads.

I want to do a leak down test on it in the next few weeks to determine what the problem is, It wont tell me the exact problem but it will tell me if I need to pull it apart.

Im debating on just buying myself a gauge for 60 bucks so i can use it until i find the problem or seeing if the local auto parts store has one to rent for a small price but then i will have to rent multiple times

So my question to you is how does the leak down test work exactly, ive never had to do one so idk.

And how do i do it?

When i loom online at gauges it shows that they go into the spark plug holes, so do i take each spark plug out and pressure test it?

you screw the gauge to where the radiator cap goes. On the Cap there it says what PSI it should be, pump the guage to that PSI. The gauge should hold all the pressure until unhooked. if it looses pressure you have a leak, and the pressure you pump into it, should locate the leak for you.

the spark plug thing, is to check compression

sometimes google is faster than DF.

I'll add that if you take the radiator cap off, and you see coolant dump out of the fill port or lots of bubbles boiling up to the surface, you have a bad headgasket, cracked head to the water jacket or a cracked block.
