Default RE: K&N FIPK Install Complete

I noticed you had some type of shield that went between your intake tube and the A/C line coming from the accumulator, did you make that or did it come with the K & N kit? I am having a problem with that exact same area on a new install on my 97 ram. I can't install my K & N because the A/C line is just too ridgid and won't move out of the way.

Thanks for any help.

the shield should be 2 pieces and it is installed around that line that you are trying to move. It is a little hard to see in this pic but the line is coming on the inside of the heat shield.

The shield that is on the tube of the K&N is actually just redirecting heat around the tube so that the tube does not get really hot from the exhaust below it. The AC line still runs underneath that shield. They sell that shield on eBay for about $15. It is a half pipe shield designed to go around the filter, but I am using it to direct heat around my K&N tube instead.

I have the back side of the shield covered with ThermoTec heat tape. When the engine is really hot, the K&N tube that is right above the exhaust is very cool still. That little shield works great I think.

As far as the AC line, the kit comes with a couple plastic zip ties that you can use to move the hose out of the way a little. Mine didn't want to move much either, but once I got the zip tie around it, I was able to get it out of the way per the installation instructions.

Couple of reasons.

1) The Airaid was loud. Since the tube is not very long, and the airhat is pretty small, you can really hear the sucking sound of the throttlbody inside the cab. Didn't sound that great.

2) The Airaid does not have a heat shield, so the filter portion sits directly above the exhaust. It seem to me that would defeat the purpose of trying to pull in cool air.

3) I made my own custom heat shield to block out heat from number 2 above, but it was not as nice looking as the K&N setup. My pickup is still under extended warrantly, and when I took it into the dealership to have something looked at, they really gave me some bad looks about my custom fabricated stuff. I don't want them to have any reason to void my warranty.

4) I wanted to compare. I figured if the Airaid turned out to perform better, I probably wouldn't have too hard a time selling the K&N. I think they perform about the same (actually think the Airaid might have been a little better, but it has a much bigger filter), and I think the K&N just looks nicer overall.

I'm staying with the K&N.
