Default Name that tune!! WTF is this noise...please

Hey guys,

A few of you saw my clicking thread, well it's given birth. This started yesterday, nothing else is present but this noise. Truck runs, drives, shifts just fine, just making this crazy noise that does indeed progress and decline with RPM's and is present constantly.

This is a 99 5.2L with around 170K. I just bought it 2 months ago and it's been great thus far. I really do not want to do a motor swap so please someone have some good news for me.

Video with sound:

Thanks!

Todd

Have you checked the tesioner pully or idler pully for slop or anything to do with the pully's?

On another note. Whats your oil pressure look like? The sound isnt coming from under the valve cover's is it?

Could be the water pump too? How about the fan blades? Are they clearing everything?

Water pump, idler pully, belt tensioner, and fan clutch. Check all of these. See how your fan is spinning inconsistently, and your tensioner is not staying in the same place? From the looks of it, most likely a bent or broken pulley.

Tension pulley is kinda sloppy I'd say 1/8" of play. If you watch that video again you'll kinda see it jiggle, but it wasn't the best angle. Oil pressure if where she has always been, 30-50 depending on RPM's and power, idle is 40PSI warm. She was low on oil, over 2qts. I have NO IDEA where that oil went. I don't burn, I don't drip.

The noise is not coming from the valve covers, it is all front end. Nothing is hitting the fan as far as I can tell although I suppose my stupid *** could have spun it by hand to check, I will when I get home.

Honestly I heard the noise, got the camera, checked the oil and posted the video as I had to get back to work. I haven't played with it at all.

Man, i say its your water pump, its shot. or the fan clutch is f-up? It seems to be bouncing all over the place on the video.

could be the combo of fan clutch being burnt out, and it put the extra work on the water pump and blew the pump.

when i first heard it though, timing chain came to mind

I might just take the belt of tonight and start it...no noise, it's an accessory and I can tell my wife I'm not a tard for buying the truck.

Not sure I've ever heard a H20 pump make that kinda noise, and I'm not weeping, nor cooling poorly. I'll check it all out. The fact that no one has said "oh man you threw a rod" or anything has made me feel a lot better.

HMM, Watched the vid again....Look at the tensioner pully when you shut the engine off. It kinda does one last tap.. And the tesnioner pully moves to that tap. Just keep watching the tesioner. That looks like its the noise to me. But hey it could be anything to do with the pully's and stuff around that general area.
