1998 Dodge VS 2000 Chevy
Actually, there's no issues with newer designed Al heads at all and, in fact, they are much preferred over cast iron. The whole coefficient of expansion rate issue has been designed out and, they are now made out of heat treated T-6 Al and are thermally tested, load tested, road tested, thermally cycled and prove to pass all environmental tests better than cast iron.
Cast iron fatigues after a period of time, and depending on where the castings are made, (mexican dodge heads that were total garbage) they may not be worth 30K miles before cracking.
So, todays Al heads are not an issue and surpass cast iron so long as they are made by a reputable outfit.

I'm shocked no one has talked about the almost $4000 price difference. If I was only using the truck a few times a year to tow and once in awhile for bad weather, I'd go with the dodge just on price alone, if its been taken care of.
Maroon I understand what your saying but we are comparing these two trucks not the diesel or ford and the 6.0 is a better engine than the magnum5.9. Sorry but to say otherwise is like argueing a 20dollar bill is better than a 50 just because its what you got.. the numbers dont lie....the hemi is a different story but again we arent comparing them.

Hi Everyone, WOW, thanks for all the feedback. We actually had a call from a dealership this morning that I had stopped in 5 months ago and the owner asked me if I'd ever bought anything. He took in a 2001 Dodge 2500 4X4 V10 Automatic with only 84K miles last night that he's serviced since new. It's a plain Jane base model but he told me if I wanted it I could have it for $7,400.00 Any comments would be appreciated, Since the 2001 is 3 yrs newer and has half the miles and a V10, I'm assuming it's a much better choice for the extra $900.
The Chevy dealer isn't willing to budge on the $10K for the 2000. I've herd a lot of comments on the Dodge Tranny issues. Did the 2001's also have issues and even if I had to put 2K into a new tranny for the Dodge, wouldn't I have a similar or better truck for about the same cost as the Chevy given the Dodge has the V10 and is a year newer? Thanks again everyone!

I was kinda surprised no one has mentioned the price difference as well. The Dodge dealer has dropped the price to $5,500.00 It's now a $4500 difference. The Chevy dealer won't budge on price. I spoke to one of the mechanics at the Chevy dealer and he told me they have a lot of money into the Chevy. He told me they had to replace the brake and fuel lines as well as a new 4X4 computer controller or something like that. He said it was a $1400 repair for most people. He said they also replaced all 4 brakes and rotors.

the 6.0 is indeed a fine engine, but to get it you have to settle for an independent front end (which truthfully is pretty weak)
the front end is the main reason i'd go with the dodge
i'd probally keep looking if i was you, there are deals all the time, especially with the times nowadays, my next truck is going to be a hi boy mid 70's ford 4x4 with 390 motor , just like the body style for the older fords and its actual "metal" as with the interior is metal, dash, door panels etc...and always hear the 390 is a good motor, even though i hate fords, thats the only one i would own........still keeping the dodge tho!
