Default Looking at buying a cummins. Any help

I was just cruising around craigslist and was wondering if this might be a good deal
truck is a 96 12v cummins w/
sunroof
Cummins 12 valve
80k on replaced tranny
4x4 works great!

THINGS DONE TO IT
33 inch Cooper discoverer ATRs (2000 miles)
#4 huckstorf fuel plate
torque converter switch
4 inch lift
6 inch mitre stack
egt boost tranny temp autometer gauges
pioneer head unit.
bed liner
block heater
sun visor with clearance lights
oil changed every 4k miles

the guys asking $4500 It doesnt say how many miles are on the body/motor and the other side of the truck is starting to rust away pretty good. Just wondering if this truck is worth that cause idk the first thing about diesels but I've always wanted one

rust would be a big factor if you can't fix it

if you've never had a diesel you might want to hang out in those forums for awhile and see what you're getting into. they're super pullers - but MAJOR money pits. there's something call injector pumps and vacuum pumps and lift pumps and turbocharges and all kinds of crap that seems to need replacing.

learn about the dreaded "53" block and be sure you DONT get one of those.

check out the diesel section here, and dieseltruckresources and dodgeowner.

Miles on the truck will make huge difference in the price. With 150k, that truck is worth $4000 max.

I agree with him except with the fact that they are major money pits. While they most certainly can be (as he pointed out), they also could be relatively close in price to a gasser, besides the obvious fact that they initially cost more than a gasser/smaller truck. A lot of this depends how you want to use it - If you want to keep it mostly stock and use it to tow, that's one monster..if you want to use it to push out 1000ft-lbs of torque...Thats another beast.

I don't know about where you're from, but around here they go for much more.

The 53 block as two above posters have mentioned is something to avoid for sure. Here's some good info on it. http://www.stamey.info/Truck/Cummins53BlockFAQ.htm

See how it was maintained, if there are records, what it was used for, how many miles, the shape of the rest of the truck (interior, etc.)..Then I think it will be much easier to assess whether it's worth it or not.
