Default Better fuel efficiency?

Hi guys new to the forum signed up to ask a question. I am going to get my drivers license in a few months and i am looking at trucks. My dad recently traded in his 99 5.2 for the cash for clunkers thing. It was a fair trade the truck was only worth about 1500, it was pretty beat. My dad bought a prius and a few weeks later he bought another truck for me to drive and for him to pull our boats 5.2 extended cab 4x4 bigger tires aftermarket wheels, aftermarket exhaust. its a really nice truck the only thing is it gets 13mpg! it would cost me about 5 bucks to drive to school every day i dont really have the money for that, which bring me to my question. Is there aftermarket add ons that will maximize my MPG's like a super chip or something. do those super chips work well?

thanks alot for helping the noob

Is this a 1500?
What year?

to be honest for a second gen that's decent mileage.

its a 2000 i thought that was about average for second gens the 99 got 12 but i think the 2000 gets a lil better because of the exhaust system that will make them get a few more mpg's right? it only has one extra mpg i think because of the tires.

To be 100% honest, there isn't (IIRC) an inkling of difference between MPGs between 1999 and 2000, given the exact same trim/options/tires/etc.

The difference, 1 MPG, could be completely contributed to the tires, for example. Perhaps the tires on the 2000 are slightly balder, or they are harder tires, or the tread pattern is less aggressive, or... you get the idea.

1. Take the big tires off. Put the stock size tires on (265/75/16). And replace the big tires with a all season tire like Michelin LTX M/S (great tire, excellent in snow and long lasting tread).

2. Get your truck running in the best running shape possible. This means change all the oil and fluids to synthetic. Do a full tune up (spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, coil), change the plenum gasket and do the kegger mod.

Someone a long time ago bought both a Hypertech and Superchips tuner and tested both. He found that he got better gas mileage with the Hypertech tuner over the Superchips.

BTW 13 mpg is not bad at all for a Quad Cab 4x4 with the 318. Thats the same as my truck and I get 13.

I'll echo what's been said. 13 isn't bad. If you are concerned about mileage, you really need another vehicle to get to school. leave the truck parked except when you need to haul or tow if that's the case. You can do some things to maybe improve that a bit, but you might end up spending a lot of money to make a small improvement in mileage.

maybe drive your dad's prius if gas cost is a worry. there's only so much you are going to do with that truck.

my truck is lifted 5.5 inches with 35" mudders and i get aroun 11.5mpg consistant. i would have to agree with everyone else on here and say that 13mpg is pretty good for our gen.

From what im seeing 13 is good on our trucks, but with my 4:10's and 35" tires i get 15mpg out of a 5.9, Idk why my truck gets so good mpgs. But yea thats about right.
