Default tranny issue

Hey guys I am new around here and have an issue I was hoping you could help with. I tried searching around but couldn't find a similar problem. I have a 1998 1500 4x4 with a 5.2l and an auto trans, I think it is a 46re. The issue is if I hit a bump too hard the trans knocks from drive into neutral. If I put the shifter to 2nd it is fine but in drive is when it happens. Also, this last weekend I went to the Oceano Dunes SVRA with some buddies and spent the better part of the time in 2wd because traction was great and had a hill that wasn't very steep (I climbed some steeper and some shallower that day with no issue) that I was slowly climbing and as I rolled into the throttle it was dropping into neutral as well. After three times in a row I dropped to 2nd and finished the hill no problem. The bump thing has happened ever since I bought the truck 5 years ago and the hill thing is new. Does anyone have an idea as to what I may be dealing with here? My fear is the transmission is going out, please tell me I am wrong.....

Does the shift indicator actually go to the N or does it stay on the D.

Sounds like it just needs a minor adjustment.

The indicator goes between drive and neutral but it is usually closer to the drive side. There is no shaking or vibration of the lever either. Also, when I shift into drive any other day most of the time if I apply pressure towards the dash and push up a bit it feels like it drops into a detent but drive is the only gear I feel that in.

i had a similar prob although mine never droped out of gear going down the road on me but a little bit of slop like it wanted to. check the linkage coming off the tranny, what it was for me was i had it rebuilt and the ****ers broke the plastic bushing inside the metal frames that serve as the linkage. the bar im talking about is similar to what you would see on pop up head lights if you know what those look like. the most obvious thing for me was it rattled just enough for me to hear it and **** me off.

Ok, that's how it's supposed to do.
