If I remember right from my xj days New Process Gears went through a name change to New Venture Gears somewhere around early to mid 90's (been a long time), which is odd because my 2000 has an NP231 xfer in it. doesn't really matter as long as the chain is good. These xfer cases are built like mini tanks.

Whether its an NP231 or an NV231 they are all the same. This is probly the most versatile unit out their very reliable and tough as nails. Its not a difference between Jeep or Truck you could literally go to junkyard and buy one for almost any Jeep and stick in your truck as a direct replacement.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Venture_Gear read that if you want to a better understanding. Bounce on over to Jeep Forum as well to learn even more they are self proclaimed experts in this area. I really wouldn't dwell on this issue much more

From my understanding there is something like 29 different variations of the 231, all which appear nearly identical but have there own differences. They have been installed in several different vehicles, ranging from full size Dodges and Chevy's, to smaller vehicles as the Jeeps and S-10's.

Thought id bring it up again since i just pulled mine for a core charge (one of my other posts i mentioned a noise when ever i let off the gas going over 45-50 mph, turns out to be something broken inside the Xfer case) and they seemed uncertain about it, I was told by Transmission exchange that my dodge ram with a 5.9l is only the second one they have ever heard of that only had a NP (or NV) 231D in it. aparently theyre supposed to have a 241 or 231dhd or just HD, Just some sort of heavier duty Xfer case.
