Exclamation Help identifying different noises

Hello all,

First off this is an awesome website with a bunch of knowledge. Thanks in advance. Just picked up a 1998 ram 1500 5.9 sport. Have two questions. Is it normal to sound like the motor is whistling? When idling it sounds like any normal engine, however when giving it gas it sounds kinda like a howl or whistle. Don't know if this is normal for this motor or not...this is my first truck. Also, when I put the trk into reverse it whines....nothing alarming, goes away as soon as I put into drive. Maybe I'm just paranoid....trk has 80,000 miles. Just read about the tranny problems and didn't know what was normal or not. Also, What is the recommended procedure for taking the trk out of 4h? Put trk into Neutral, shift to 2h and then reverse for 10 feet back into d? ....Thanks in advance for all your help and knowledge!!

Joe

Does it have an owner's manual ? And when you get a chance, click on the user cp at the top of the page and fill out your truck info. and signature. You will get many more replys to a question.

Sounds like you may have a minor transmission issue,It's hard to tell from here and I'm not a tranny guru. You'll get more input tomarrow it's kind of late. The "whistling" sounds like a vacume leak. You can go from 4h to 2 hi in D at very very low speeds or N. No need to use reverse to engage or disengage.Welcome to the site.

i have the same whistling noise...and found out it was wind going through a non aerodynamic part of the truck....sounds weird but as for it being the tranny...my tranny was beefed up 19K ago and i have the whistling and the tranny is shifting mint, so i doubt its the tranny
