Jason,

You do know that pre-96 (OBD I), it simply flashes the check engine light repeatedly, right? Where-as on a post-96 (OBD II), it displays the code itself.

Also, you have to do it fairly quickly I think. IIRC its <5 seconds.

Thanks again rideordie.... I'm almost certain I'm doing the on/off sequence in less than 5 seconds.. I may go back out and try it again.

As I mentioned in an earlier post I replaced the gas cap...... and this may have fixed the problem. So, if the problem is in fact fixed would the PCM still send out an error code??

if the problem doesnt exist any more then the PCM wouldnt kick out a code. so obviously theres still something there causing the CEL to come one

Thanks yakkier...... I guess I'm hoping that the "condition" doesn't exist at this time....... But in this case the PCM has to go through a certain number of cycles without registering a fault before before it "declares" my Ram good to go..... and resets the CEL. I hope that makes sense......

A question for all........ Have you ever gotten a P0441...... and if you have did the PCM reset the CEL ..... OR..... did you turn it off with a scanner or disconnecting the battery.....

Thanks everyone...........

Finally!!!

Today I got my '97 Ram to give the fault code by doing the on-off-on-off-on sequence.. It was a "31" which is the P0441 code read by the scanner a short time ago.

I can't decide if I going to disconnect the battery..... or wait a while to see if the PCM will turn the ECL off. Thanks I will probably end up disconnecting the battery... for your help everyone

Maxx, I think on previous attempts I simply didn't wait long enough for the code to be flashed. I completed the on-off sequence in less than the 5 seconds, but when the light didn't start flashing within 3 or so seconds I turned the key off..... killing the process. Today I waited a few more seconds after doing the on-off-on-off-on sequence....... and sure enough the light start flashing the code. Good luck.
