Default wish I knew to ask the right question...

...but maybe you folks can help me out anyhow.

Long story short:

Went to get a new inspection sticker. Garage mechanic says, "You need a whole front end housing". (Lotsa rust - that's Maine for ya) Found out the gear ratio is 3.55. Junkyard asks, "Is it ABS?" (4WD) From reading my manual and (original) owners guide it seems like its ABS rear wheels only.

So I guess my question is, how much of a difference does this make? If I can only find a used front end housing that is ABS(?), will that still work for switching out?

Any and all help much appreciated!

Thanks, - Jay

the only difference in the front having abs vs non-abs is the sensor in the steering knuckle.

so if you have rear wheel only ABS truck, its acceptable to put in an ABS front axle, and just not hook up the front sensors.

edit - welcome to DF. I can't really see why you would need an entire front end housing.... its all big heavy cast iron. i'd get a second opinion. georgia used to have state inspections a long time ago, and it was a really crooked situation. inspectors would find all kinds of **** wrong, and charge an arm and a leg to fix it. the whole program was finally scrapped, thank goodness.

It should work. The only difference is your front wheel hubs dont contain the ABS sensors, but if you find one in the junk yard that has 4 wheel ABS, the front wheel hubs will have the ABS sensor built in.
So all you would have to do is just get a tie strap and secure the wire harness on the other axle out of the way or just cut the wires coming out of the wheel hubs. You wont set off any ABS light because you never had 4 Wheel ABS to begin with. Hope this helps.

Shapleigh. Nice neighborhood, until I moved in though.

Not to worry, lived in Middleton Ma 20 years. Just takes a bit of getting used to. Ever go here? :

Any other issues than the idiot light going off? (It'll feel perfectly at home in my truck)

Thanks for your quick reply!

is moose meat any good? i tried some elk jerkey one time and it was way too salty. i also ate a bison burger one time and it was the same deal, way too salty. deer meat is a different story though, i could eat that every day and wouldn't have any complaints.

i guess i'll have to get another one at meers in oklahoma the next time i'm out there. i ate one here in town so there's no telling where it came from or the quality of it. but meers makes a mean longhorn beef burger, so i'm sure their bison burgers are just as good.
