Default Tire question for off-road owners.

I am looking to upgrade to a larger tire size. I would like to go with a set of 285 70 17's on my 2000 1500 off road.
Anyone here with an off road put a larger size on thiers?
Any fitting issues?
Thanks.

Don't know if this is any help, but..

my Ram is not an off-road, but I am swapping out my 16" rims for the 17" Off-Road rims (they are sitting in my garage now). As soon as I get my gears done (3.55 to 4.10), then I will be installing a 2" lift, and changing my wheels and tires to from my current 265/75/16 to 285/70/17. I should have all this done in the next 3-4 weeks.

I know many off-road owners who run 285's without any rubbing issues. They fit good. With my 2" lift, I am expecting them to fit good for me too.

Cool, thanks for the info.
I ordered them yesterday, and the guy at the tire shop called today to make sure they would fit.
(He said because he has to special order them, I would be unable to return them if they didn't fit)

Make sure you post pics when you are done. (I love the off road wheels!)
I lucked out, my Ram came factory with the 4.10 gears.

it depends on the rim and the tire (285 75-16's anyway) some rub, some dont. I've seen 285's on stock rims that rubbed (no lift) and on my truck I had 285's on stock rims and no rubbing. I eventually went to a Mickey Thompson Classic II rim and a 2.5" lift in the front. but I never had rubbing issues on my truck...

Ya, I really like the off-road rims too, that is why I am swapping.

One other thing. A 285/75/16 is 32.83" diameter. A 285/70/17 is 32.70" diameter.
Not a huge difference, but it might be enough that a 285 on a 17" won't rub.
Both are the same width.

Here is some more interesting comparison data:

Tire 1 - 285/75R16
Section Width: 11.22 in
Rim Diameter: 16 in
Rim Width Range: 7.5 - 9 in
Overall Diameter: 32.83 in
Sidewall Height: 8.41 in
Radius: 16.41 in
Circumference: 103.1 in
Revs per Mile: 633.5

Tire 2 - 285/70R17
Section Width: 11.22 in
Rim Diameter: 17 in
Rim Width Range: 7.5 - 9 in
Overall Diameter: 32.70 in
Sidewall Height: 7.85 in
Radius: 16.35 in
Circumference: 102.7 in
Revs per Mile: 636.0

Diameter Difference: 0.4%

I used to like the off road rims too, but opted for the MT's and the greater tire options available at the time (last year).

here's a cool calculator that some might find useful... calculator

these guys did my gear swap on my truck and lucky for me, they're less than a mile from work [sm=burnout.gif]

I love my off -raod wheels but finding tires is somwhat difficult. There isn't much to choose from compared to 16" rim. I still won't give them up. I am going to get some 285/70/17 BFG all-terrains put on in a coulpe of weeks, $836.00 mounted $ balanced, not too bad. Let us know how yours turn out. I don't think there will be any rubbing. Looking at mine there is all kinds of space in there.

Thanks for the info everone.

I got a quote of $881.47 for the 285/70/17 BFG all terrain t/a's (mounted and balanced)
A little more than I wanted to spend, but the guy at the tire place told me that it would have been alot cheeper if I wanted a size he had in stock, as opposed to these that he has to order in. To me the extra money is worth getting what you want.
Make sure you order them ahead of time. I had 2 other tire shops tell me they had no idea when they would be able to get them in. They all told me blackwall are availible, but the raised white letter are on nationwide back order. The place I ended up going to made a few calls to the BFG warehouse, and said he can get them in a week.

If you go offroad with it I wouldn't get the BFG AT's. You minus well get slicks. I have heard nothing but bad about them in the mud. On the other hand I have heard nothing but good about the BFG MT's and everyone says the AT's don't last much longer on pavement anyway. I run the MT's I would look for those if you can get them in a size that will fit.

I agree with Mr Home... I have them on my truck and cant wait to get rid of them. I'm going to a Toyo Open country 295 75x16 tire next time around. I had these on my jeep grand cherokee and loved them. quiet, sticky and sure footed in the mountains. they cost about the same as the at's too...
