Default Questions about steering and oil

Hey guys. Just picked up a 01 Ram 1500 sport (offroad pkg) with the 5.9. I sold my 94 F350 with the 7.5 big block for it. Anyways the truck is beautiful. Was a 1 owner truck and NEVER used for heavy towing or for construction. AEM Brute force intake, Magnaflow HF cat and cat back exhaust. Soon to have a SCT tune from hemifever) Has 114K on it, but deff well maintained/cared for. Just a couple questions since I am so used to the ford

-Is it normal for the steering to be tight...I mean it tough. Not like a work out or anything, but not easily turned with 1-2 fingers...like the ford. Normal sized Goodyears on there too

-The owner before me used Mobil 1 synthetic 15W50 since day 1....that crap is like mollasas. I just changed the oil today and used Mobil 1 synthetic 10W30. Should I have stayed with the 15W50? Could I have hurt anyhing by changing and do you think anything could have been hurt by the guy using such a thick oil for so long?

Thats it for now...pics to come when I can clean her up and the salt is gone from these damn NJ roads

Welcome to the forum! and to dodge.

the steering is a yes and the oil is a no.

it's normal for our trucks, atleast the 4 iv owned including the one i have now, its even worse on the 4x4's. the oil depends on what its used for, how many miles it has and what part of the country your in "above or below sea level" in most cases 10/30 is what i use and always have, i was raised in florida and i live in minnesotta now. two WAY different area's of the country, from one extreme to another and i use the same oil as i did down there an everything is fine.

Changing oil weights doesnt hurt anything, at all.

Switching back to the 15W-30 shouldnt hurt. Wonder why the owner used such a thick oil?

welcome to df and congrats on your purchase. the 01 offroad with is the best one ever made.

i don't think the steering should be that tight. sitting still maybe, but moving - it should turn easily. jack up the front and see how it feels.

the 50 weight won't hurt it any, but i think you'd be better off with 30, unless maybe he was trying to slow down leaks.
