Heavy duty is heavy duty. Putting in beefier/better parts will help your trans last longer. You keep eliminating weak links. If you follow that build, (which as I recall, was for a member that regularly towed a 7K pound trailer...) and don't really tow/haul much, and install a nice trans cooler..... you will be golden.

I've come up with an excellent, budget oriented combination specifically for heavy duty stock replacements that I've used on a handful of 46RE transmissions:

This rebuild kit from Transparts: http://www.ebay.com/itm/200435343909...84.m1439.l2649

It comes with Alto USA clutches and steels in 47RE quantities, so you can upgrade the number of clutches with the right number of steels and or pressure plate thickness. The sealing ring/gasket set is very complete and high quality.

Toss the intermediate band that comes with it, and get these bands:

I like the Superior/Fairbanks shift kit. The Superior kit will do everything the Fairbanks kit does, however the Fairbanks kit includes a heavy duty intermediate band strut for about $20 dollars more than the Superior kit. However, upgrading the intermediate servo to a Superior Super Servo is a great upgrade to increase holding power, and it comes with a heavy duty band strut as well so if you go this route, stick with the Superior kit and save $20 bucks.

As mentioned, either a Sonnax or Superior low/reverse servo piston is a smart upgrade.

ALWAYS replace the OD snap ring.

For the torque converter, I've had good luck with ProKing's from Advance Auto. The CR94L can be had for around $80 after using online discounts.

Almost forgot, definitely get a reusable pan gasket from the dealership and obviously remove the check valve and install an aftermarket cooler. Here's the parts laid out from my latest build:

I tried looking up the low/reverse servo piston, the shift kit and I has no idea what I was looking for. Are their links I can go to? Also, the OD snap ring. What brand should that be replaced with? Link? Sorry, i have no idea what I am doing for tranny stuff this is helpful. thanks

Probably not. BUt they should have a kit to fit.

Keep in mind, Alto frictions come is several different grades (i.e. heat resistance). The Red Altos are the higher grade. The package probably is the std grafe frictions. Not that there is anything wrong with these, but I recommend the Reds.

If its built to handle heavy towing every day, it will handle most everything else you throw at it. Off roading isnt easy on the trans (and other parts) so that list of parts should ensure it lasts a lot longer than a "factory" rebuild.

Or get a Mega Viper trans from PATC.

I'm in the process of rebuilding a 46re at school and the master overhaul kit actually addresses some issues. (I'd assume whoever is rebuilding your trans is using a master overhaul kit) the main things it addresses is using more steels and composites in the front, rear, and overdrive clutches so there's more holding power.
