Default Drive shaft update...where would you buy?

Hello all, newby here!

My son and I are working on his first truck. It was purchased this weekend, with a noticeable launch shudder. I pulled the TSBs (03-04-96), and found that the two piece drive shaft should have been replaced. The carrier bearing assembly needs to be removed and a one piece shaft installed.

I looked at the OEM catalog, and it would be $625 before shipping. I have found other vendors for less money. Has anyone experience with a shortline company that makes drive shafts?

Our truck is a '96 2wd cc short bed with 90k and an automatic. It has the 318. It has had new u joints, tires, wheel bearings, and the transmission serviced. The tires were even rebalanced. The previous owner apparently couldn't find the problem.

Thanks for the input!

Did you install new ujoints and hanger bearing?(or are we talking racing here) Look in your local yellow pages for a driveshaft shop.

The work was done by a goodyear shop while owned by previous owner. The receipt does not detail carrier bearing replacement.

Then replace it. Any auto parts store should have them.

That would be an option. If that would have fixed the problem, why did Dodge put new one-piece shafts in to address the TSB? Does anyone else have the updated shaft?

I dont know if mine was replaced by dodge or not but I have a aluminum one piece driveshaft on my truck, the original broke when my dad was driving it (looked at it did not see any names or writing on it.

Because carrier bearings eventually wear out, and thus you are back to square one. What you could do is find out if later 2WD Rams came with a 1 piece driveshaft and take it off a truck at the junkyard.

Welcome to Dodge Forum. Looks like you and your son have a great project.

^we would need more info before we could suggest anything. like if it is a long box or short box.
it is interesting that yours has a 2 piece drive shaft. my 91 d150 short box had a 1 piece drive shaft.

You could go to a junkyard and find a drive shaft of a similar truck there was a TSB that replaced the 2 piece driveshaft with a 1 piece my truck had it done, looked through some papers after I first posted and found the service papers
