Default No idea whats going on with my engine... IT HARDLY STARTS!

Any ideas guys, lately it's been getting harder and harder to start. takes atleast 30 seconds to start, it'll spin over fine spit then die. it's got new destrib plugs plug wires rotor. When it finally starts it smells like really old raw gas, kinda a sweet smell but very very strong. i know i dont have old gas in my tank because iv replaced the tank when i first got it and it's never sat more than a couple of days and i'v always kept heet in it because of the way the gas is around here.

I know my starter is slipping sometimes but it engages fine right now and i'v got a new battery "4 months old" and the alt testst fine.

i checked down inside the throttle body to check and see if i have oil in it "plenum issue" which i dont. it doesnt smoke or knock so it's not flooding, i have no idea and hopfully some one on here has had the same problem an fixed the issue.

have you replaced your fuel pump yet? Pull the fuel supply line at the fuel rail, put fuel line into empty bottle, turn key to position 2. If the fuel pump is working it will quickly fill the bottle. Also check fuel pump relay and fuse.

Well, what your experiencing could be many things from a spent fuel pump to leaky injectors to no voltage at the coil to, a faulty coil driver CKT at the PCM to, blocked / restricted air cleaner to, faulty IAC motor thus not allowing any air into the mix thus running it very rich at cold startup.

So, as you can see, it could be many possibilities.

So, in order to determine what the root cause is, one has to go through one component / sub-system at a time until the root problem is found.

For the sake of argument here, we could immediately check your IAC to see if it's working or not very quickly.

One of the most common root causes is a failing IAC motor or a jammed pintle valve assy. When this happens, it fails to open thus not allowing any air into the TB to mix with the fuel. This creates a super rich fuel mix and is especially worse during the winter weather as, the colder it gets, the more fuel is pumped to keep it running at startup so, if your IAC is not functioning, it will never idle at startup. It will choke out.

So, your going to remove the AIC assy with the harness attached and gently handle it. NOTE: DO NOT TOUCH, HANDLE OR PULL ON THE PINTLE assy at any time during this test.

Have someone turn the key to <ON>.

Note movement in the pintle assy. If no movement is seen- it is not functioning either because of one or more things:

-defective IAC assy or

-faulty IAC CKT

The first is an easy fix but, if it's the latter, there's one extra step to verify.

-take a meter and measure the voltage coming into the sensor- should be around 8-volts if memory serves me correct.

So, that will verify it's getting power. If power is not there: there's an issue with the supply CKT.

If there's power but, it's not moving, either it's jammed or it's open.

R&R (remove and replace)

Just be sure to remove the negative lead at the battery before disconnecting the harness as well as connecting the harness.

THE PCM will need to re-learn the new IAC so, it will take a few minutes worth of running before it re-positions the valve to spec.

This is where we'll start looking first. Check the simplest systems first.

Now, I noted you mentioned sweet smell. Q: Does this smell like anti-freeze by chance? Reason being, sometimes, a cracked head will allow coolant to be sucked into the chambers thus choking out the mix. But, it would have to be a gross leaker in order to affect it to the level your seeing.

Fuel pressure should read ~49psi -52psi cold startup. The root cause in this case is your fuel pump / regulator is not functioning to OEM specs.

Time to R&R that pump. (remove and replace) GO with Carter pumps- they are pretty robust and well made.
