Diff Fluid Change Questions - '01 2500 4X4
or if theres a lil tag on one of the top bolts of the diff cover
There is both a fluid capacity and fluid type chart at the top of this forum.
Steps:
Take diff cover off
Let the fluid drain
Clean off the gasket
Put the new gasket on and put the cover back on
Fill with new fluid
I reccomend Mobil 1 or Valvoline Synpower fluid. Royal Purple is grossley overpriced.

It doesnt stink that bad, and many of the gear oils are limited slip ready meaning they dont need friction modifier, I know royal purple and valvoline syntech have it in them, says it on the back of the bottle

-Take diff cover off
-Let the fluid drain
-Jack up the left and the right side of the truck one at a time so that dirty fluid that is in the axle tubes can drain down into the housing and out.
-Squirt in a bottle or two or clean new diff fluid right onto everything to help wash down all the old fluid as much as possible. Or, sometimes I will just use brake cleaner and actaully spray everything down until it is absolutely as clean as it can be. This ensures you have gotten rid of as much of the old fluid and metal shavings as possible.
-Thouroughly clean off the magnet that is in the bottom of the housing.
-Inspect everything for wear, damage, etc. Use a little mirror if you need to see into the back.
-Clean off the old gasket material from both the housing surface and the cover, being careful not to scar either surface.
-Put new RTV on (go completely around each bolt hole, and either one large bead or two narrow beads between bolt holes) and put the cover back on.
-Tighten down slowly and evenly (side to side and up to down) to half the recommended torque (about 15 ft lbs).
-Wait 15-20 minutes for the RTV to start to set up.
-Tighten the rest of the way to the proper torque spec (30 ft lbs).
-Wait 1 hour for the RTV to finish curing (or whatever time is recommended on the particular RTV you are using). I like to use Permatex The Right Stuff or Permatex Ultra Black.
-Fill with new fluid and friction modifier (if needed) up to the bottom edge of the fill hole.
-Drive around some to get the fluid distributed and up to operating temp.
-Check for leaks, and add more fluid as necessary until it is to the bottom edge of the hole again.

Excellent info. Thanks gentlemen!!!
I went to AutoZone to get gaskets. Didn't have the manual. They said the front and rear diff gaskets are the same(?). I believe I have a Dana 60. I counted 10 bolts on the rear.
Also, do you know what size the bolts are?
Thanks again!

Bolts are either 1/2 or 9/16.
