Hi,

I picked up an '01 2500 4X4 in good shape at a local sheriff auction. I want to change front and rear diff fluid and would like to know the fluid capacity of each differential.

I've never changed fluid myself and if someone could share their experience on how to proceed, I'd appreciate it.

Is there a plug in each differential that allows you to drain the oil?

Are any of the aftermarket covers worth getting? What is the benefit?

What diff oil would you recommend?

Look in the FAQ section for capacities and type of lube to use.

You have to remove the covers to drain them,clean them up and reinstall using black rtv . It would be very wise of you to get a Haynes manual or download this https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...tmas-guys.html

 

There is both a fluid capacity and fluid type chart at the top of this forum.

Steps:
Take diff cover off
Let the fluid drain
Clean off the gasket
Put the new gasket on and put the cover back on
Fill with new fluid

I reccomend Mobil 1 or Valvoline Synpower fluid. Royal Purple is grossley overpriced.

 

Also, if you have limited slip differentials, you will need some friction modifyer to add to the gear oil.

 

how does one tell if they have limited slip?

i know it is probably an easy answer but i just dont know? i remmeber somewhere about jacking up the rear end and spinning one tire ...something like that

 

It will tell you on the tag under the hood or in the glove box. Or raise it, spin one wheel . If they both turn in same direction it is limited slip, if one turns the opposite way it's an open dif.
