dont some 96's have the 46RH and some 46RE. Do you know what type it is?

Also i would highly recommend taking it to a shop to have the bands adjusted.

Very good deal, IMO id get it.

just an FYI, reverse on our trucks puts twice as much strain on the motor than in drive, so it would need alot more pressure in reverse.. So like stated above there may be a pressure issue.

Look at the sticker on the bottomside of the hood. Or get you build sheet from the dealer.

I am going to go for it. This is the first truck I have found that is perfect for me in every other way (room for the family, 4x4, long box etc), so really what is a new transmission when the vehicle really fits the bill?

It is about an hours drive from here so I made arrangements to go pick it up tonight when I get off shift. I will see if the under hood sticker is there and post what I find tomorrow.

if you like the truck go for it. before assuming that trans is shot, take it to a couple of trans shops for a check up. they can check the pressures w/o taking anything apart.

im sure the tranny is just fine. 1 owner that is older, that means the truck hasnt been beaten on.

i bought my truck with 187K. the trans was beefed up/rebuilt at 181K (PO had recipt) He towed, and off roaded with it and it lasted up to then. but i have the 46RH and like i said ive heard that they are tougher than 46RE.

just and FYI 46RH is a mechanical transmission, and the 46RE is an electrical transmission.

but Def. a good buy IMO

Ok good news, I bought the Ram last night and brought it home. As crappy as the roads were (snowstorm, blowing snow, very limited visibility) I didn't have to use 4x4 and the truck was perfect!! Well, mechanically anyway...I discovered it has a dent in the tail gate, a broken tailgate handle (with a new one in a box in the back seat) a crack on the windshield, needs a engine belt, needs a flasher for the 4 ways/turn signals and a really good wash/vacuum! Otherwise it was as good as or better than described.

About the reverse issue. It does have reverse...its not very strong but it does work. I will get it into a shop on Tuesday (after the holiday) and get it serviced and the bands tightened.

All in all, I am very happy with this deal!! Thanks to all for the help and suggestions!!

Ok, time for an update. I have the truck and have looked at the stickers etc both in the door frame and under the hood (took pics so I could reference them when searching online) and there is no mention of which tranny is under there. Is there anywhere else it might be located?

Take your vin number to any dodge dealership and they can type it into their database and print it off for you
