well if the T chain broke i doubt it would have started for ya as it would be all out of time. how about a defective water pump. maybe a fin broke off and its bouncing around.

maybe pop off your valve covers too (as much of a pain in the *** that is) and make sure you dont have a broken valve spring

Drain the oil... That`s a cheap way to see if there`s any troubles in the bottom. But it`s probably in the top end if there`s a lot of sharp rapping...

I had the same noise after changing my oil pump and all it was (thanks to someone here) was the sheet metal plate that covers the bell housing area / flywheel. I had to re-form it as it was bent and hitting the flywheel plate bolts. Sounds like a hollow, tons of noise coming from the oil / crank area but, from inside truck, yeah, startling because, from that perspective, one can't tell where it's coming from.

Now, as for the stalling around corners- check your EVAP canister - it may be plugged and, for some reason, I recall reading many times about this occurring due to a bad canister. R&R it anyway if it's old.

Remember; do some checking before you spend any money. Pull the spark plugs and see if they're all together or not. That would be a good sign for if you have anything inside of your cylinders.
Do you have any engine codes?

Little you can do without digging into it a bit, eliminating possibilities.
Good luck, update when able.
