Default 97 1500 tranny

Ok i am wondering what years of trannys can i use to replace mine that has turned into a grenade. A local salvage shop told me 97s are a "one year" as in only 97s will work, which i think is BS. so what will work?

96 to 02... Most you might have to do is swap out your cooler line fittings.

is it 4x4 or 2x4, gotta get the same. other than that, you most likely have a 47re, could be a 47rh dont remember the year it changed, one is hydraulic one is electronically controlled.

He has a 46RE... The last year for the RH was 95. The 46RE was used all the way up till they completely axed the Magnum. 47RH/RE is strictly diesel/V10 as the bellhousing is specific to those two engines.

Thanks for this thread, I came here to post the same question as my 97 tranny just went out. The junkyards are telling me the 97' trannys are year specific.

I'm doing the replacement myself and I do not mind swapping out a few parts.

Which parts are different?

No problem man haha, I am debating on whether to swap it out my self or not, never have done one but im sure me and my dad could figure it out haha(he did a auto to manual swap on his old ford probe). I just had mine go out and got a salvage yard 97 46re and had a shop put it in this last tuesday, now the OD is grinding/goin out so i have to keep it in 3. The salvage yard warrants the tranny so i can exchange it for another but they dont have a 97, but they do have a 98.

How tough of job is it to swap out a tranny yr self????

The swap is not hard if you have the slightest mechanical ability. I have not done the swap with a dodge as I have always owned GM but it's still the same process.

I just need to figure out what was changed on the different year models.

Make sure that you get a tranny jack to take it out and put it back in.
