scanner tool opinions
Hey everyone. I am kicking around the idea of buying one of those scanner tools (I guess thats what you call them) one of those handy little things that will tell you whats wrong with your truck by giving you codes etc. I don't know much about them so bare with me. Is there a certain one I should look for, like does one do anything better than another? Are they pretty vehicle specific?...could I find one that would work on my pickup and my mini cooper? how are they for price? what is a good one to get? I'd like to get one in the future instead of having to go to my mechanic when something has gone wrong that i can't figure out. Thanks
my uncle has a snap-on one, i couldnt tell you the part number or anything like that but his can do everthing from turn on switches to checking vitals, but he payed around $700 for it, ive one from oreillys that just checks codes and it does what i need it to do, if you get one be shure it can clear codes, it would be worthless if it cant do that
but a 95 isnt obdII, you can get one that reads both though, its gonna be alittle more though, if i were getting another one this is what i would get for no more than what i use one for http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...0664&ppt=C0103 its obdI and II complient

hey thanks guys this helps out a bunch! I wasn't too thrilled about the $700 estimate for an obdI and II compatible one but it is what it is i guess! maybe down the road i'll pick one up. thanks again!
not sure about the obd1 dodges, but all the obd1 gm cars I've owned in the past were easy to get your codes. On the data link there were only 2 pins that had connectors in them, short these 2 pins out with a paperclip or whatever and the rad fan would come on(for whatever reason?) and it would flash the codes out on the CEL, kinda morse code style. 1 flash, pause, 2 flashes means code 12, etc.
Again, dunno if this works on the older dodges, but worth a try if you just wanna see what the codes are.
As for the scanners, I have an OBDPros USB scantool. It plugs into a laptop and can do some pretty cool things, but it's a PITA dealing with all the cords. And of course, a month after I got it, my laptop decides to ****e itself and die. I'm looking to get a handheld unit also just for the convenience.

would you happen to want to get rid of the scanner ?
