Thinking Of buying a '96 Ram, but need some help
Hey all, I just signed up to the forum and I need some advice if you don't mind. My father wants to sell me a 1996 Dodge ram SLT. It's a V8 and it is in immaculate condition. The price is real nice, he only wants $2500 for it. 125k miles. Brand new tires, custom exhaust, air-ride, and some other goodies. My only concern is that hea said when the transmission is cold it will slip into 2nd gear. But if you let the truck warm up for 5 mins or more it's fine. Is this a major problem? Have any of you had this problem before? Is the truck worth buying if it has this problem? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
buy it!!! cheep and the tranny should be an easy fix... band adjustment and a good flush. get rid of the in-radiator tranny cooler (buypass it) and get the biggest external you can.
Ok, done. I bought it. As for the tranny problem, come to find out it hasn't done that in months. So i guess I'll just drive it and leave it alone till something happens. I'm real happy i got this truck and i'll be posting in here alot more. thanks.

OK, now that it's yours, go get the tranny flushed and a new filter put on. this way you know when it was serviced last and if there is anything that it needs now, the tranny guy will see it and hopefully it'll only be an adjustment.
better to do this now then to wait until it fails... if it fails, it'll definately be more costly.

Get it flushed and the filter changed, you may also want to get an external cooler so you dont have to use the factory one. A tranny flush and filter will do wonders for a tranny. Also I was told at a transmition shop that dodge has the best factory cooling system for the tranny, but because of the design it also collects the most crap out of the tranny to.
Tranny flush and filter = $100
External tranny cooler = $80
Rebuilding your dodge tranny = $1500
I'd rather spend the 180 in preventive maintence, wouldnt you?
