Default Few Questions...(Alternator and front end)

ok so i finally diagnosed what was making the whining sound in the motor, and what was being amplified through my sub, its my alternator. I poped the hood after some mudding, and its gotten about 3 times louder, it whines pretty loud. Now my volts are right at 15-16 even with the subs on. Now should i be worried on if this thing is going to seize? Or should i just run it with the whine?

Also this week, if the weather holds up, im doing my axle seals, tranny mount, front axle u-joints, Drivers side wheel bearing, sway links, and pass. side ball joints....this will make everything pretty much new in the front end. (292.84 is what all this is going to cost, not to shabby) Im doing it myself, and ive read the write up and everything, but does anyone have some good pics of how to take out the carrier? thats the only thing im worried about.

Thanks

Well, usually they just quit charging, but in a bad case, I have seen them seize and then launch a belt. Might as well pony up and change it because the absolute minimum that it's going to do is leave you on the side of the road stranded.

Ya know my brother took apart his alt on a different car , and said all he did was cleaned and or replaced the brushes cheap too, said not much to it. I dont know if this pertains to all alt, but maybe its something you can look into and clean or lube, i've never taken a alt apart before my self,(usually just replace them) but figured id give it a whirl when mines takes a crap which should be anyday!, because ive had the original alt and factory batt still in my truck

16v with accessories on sounds a bit much, high output can have bad consequences.
A whine from an alternator can be taken as fair warning, I'd change it.

My bimmer was doing the same damn thing along time ago, if i turnd my amp on it would spit out a loud whining sound through my speakers, the higher the RPM"s got the louder it got. finally i just stopped listening to the radio and sold the system.. wish i had know what the issue was back then otherwise i would have kept it in the car.

once the volts hit close to 15 i would have it checked out, its a good way to cook a battery or even worse, the whining is a warning, i would check around to see if a local shop can rebuild it

The whining is normally caused by a grounding problem but since you can hear it in the engine bay I would have to say get it checked out. Alt are pretty simple mechanisms. Windings and brushes with an internal voltage regulator. Pretty simple to repair, at least the ones I have ever dealt with. I thought I read on here somewhere that Mopar had a little something internally that made it diffucult to do. Not sure what it was maybe as simple as getting a specialty tool.

Voltage regulation is controlled by the PCM, not within the ALT or external unit as with older vehicles.
I looked into getting mine rebuilt, not much savings off of just getting a new one.
Didn't look into doing it myself as I needed the truck back on the road by the next day.

i guess ill add it to the list. I just spent 300 bucks on this thing yesterday...but my truck is kinda like my best friend, i love my truck.

Just got her new front u-joints, drivers wheel bearing, Brake pads, Tranny mount, New Spectre Air Filter, and axle seals.

did the tranny mount yesterday, and put it this way, thetranny munt came out in two pieces, so that can tell you how bad it was lol. real easy to change as well.

So i guess alternator is next....(140 bucks) guess that aint to bad.

Nah that ain't too bad when I did mine it was like $215 before the $50 core charge. So at least you get some money back that way.
