Default wierd hum/vibration only in 2wd

I just put the front drive shaft on a friends 2000 dodge ram 1/2 ton 4wd with the 5.9. He says he got a good deal on this truck due to the noise, the guy he bought it from said it was the transfer case. He took it to a local shop who rebuilt the transfer case, they said it looked fine but did it anyways. When he got the truck back it still did it, so he had the rear end completely rebuilt. It has seen better days to say the least. After that the noise was still there, the shop told him it was due to not having the front drive shaft on and if he put it in 4wd it would stop.

He did this and it did indeed stop, they said when the front driveshaft was put on it would stop all together. Well tonight we put the DS on and it is still there but only in 2wd it goes away in 4wd. The noise starts around 50-60 km/h but not always. When it does start making the noise you can hear it start quite abruptly and usually goes away at highway speed (but not always) it is inconsistent.

The noise does not happen in 4wd and it is like a hum/ vibration, you can feel it in the floor. I can't really pinpoint exacly where it is coming from. Does anyone have any idea what this could be or have had a similar problem. I have never owned a dodge and this is a buddies truck, i'll do my best to answer your questions.

If that was the case why would it not do it in 4wd even with no front drive shaft?

i think we need some more info on when the vibration is happening, like speeds, RPM ranges, does it go away if you put it into neutral, does it do it if your braking? i mean it could even possibly be a trans issue or a front rear

It usually starts around 50-60 km/h and goes away around 110 km/h but like i said it is not consistent. It does it through out the entire rpm range and doesn't go away when in neutral. Not real sure on the braking, i will ask my friend to try it and see if it goes away when he brakes.

Hey I'm having the exact problem. Same noise and vibration, between 35 and 60 mph comes and goes and usually doesn't do it at highway speed. Did you ever come up with a solution?

Edit: anyone else on the forum have any ideas on what my problem could be? it comes and goes so quick I can't figure out what's goin on with it. Any insight wod be nice.
Thanks
